Leaving Kangaroo Island behind us, we set off for Melbourne. There was plenty of time. We wanted to explore a little of Australia on the way.
First, we needed to do a long loop inland around Lake Alexandria. This was pleasant, uneventful driving. Quiet roads through rolling hills and woodlands. Coming back to the coast, the land became a lot flatter. We walked on the beach and watched some sea birds. We also spotted some cormorants and honeyeater on a fence.

The next couple of days were quiet. Not many people around. Not much happening. Quiet days and quiet evenings. The sea and the birds always ensured there was something to look at. We camped by a lake and got visited by Purple Swamphens. Funny looking birds with the most enormous feet. No doubt these are handy for walking across floating swamp plants. I found myself watching them carefully to see how they avoided tripping over their own toes. This was more interesting that it sounds.

Pelicans provided the interest for one particularly good sunset. This was another camp by a lake where we spent the evening watching Pelicans silhouetted by a fantastic red and orange backdrop. There seemed to be a lot of Pelicans around. Next day, we found even more pelicans. At lunch, we stopped at a delightful place overlooking an inland lake. I took a short walk around and stumbled across the biggest flock of pelicans I have ever seen. A hundred or more all tightly rafted together in the centre of the lake. As best I could tell they were feeding. Possibly they had just stumbled on a large school of fish. It was all over in a few minutes. They split up and flew off in different directions.

That evening, we arrived in Kingston, home of Larry the Lobster. Now we knew that we were really getting to see the sights of Australia.
